The best way and cheapest way I know is to place those thin nylon net ( people use to keep bird off the fruit trees ) along the edge of the pond and hang over the edge a little bit like 12 inches or so. This way when the birds come to the pond their leg will tangle by the net and they will become insecure and will not return to the pond. This way will also preserve the bird and not hurting them. See the article on page 22 of the Spring 2002 edition of Aquascape Magazine "What's so Great About the Great Blue Heron?" While the article recommends this solution, at least one heron has learned how to outwit it by moving slowly enough not to activate the motion sensor. Let's hope this heron is sterile. I liked the suggestion to surround your pond with plastic pink flamingos. Herons cannot fish while laughing.
